The urgency for sustainable business practices has intensified following the landmark decisions at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. The intersection of environmental challenges with socio-economic issues in Africa has become even more pronounced, with climate change emerging as both an environmental crisis and a livelihood dilemma. As we approach COP30 in Brazil, the private sector in East Africa must step up its role in advancing the climate action agenda, particularly in light of the new finance goals established at COP29.
The UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) concluded with a groundbreaking agreement on climate finance:
Sustainable Finance has evolved to encompass Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors, aiming to ensure ethical financing that protects the environment and promotes social responsibility. The outcomes of COP29 have amplified the importance of this approach, particularly for developing nations like Kenya.
Africa’s climate change mitigation and adaptation journey now represents an even more significant investment opportunity, estimated at USD 3 trillion by 2030[1]. With 75% of this investment expected to come from the private sector, the financial industry is uniquely positioned to capitalize on this opportunity while driving sustainable development.
Our primary goal remains to achieve 100% compliance among all regulated companies in Kenya’s financial sector with global sustainability requirements by 2030. This goal now aligns closely with the new global finance targets set at COP29, emphasizing the need for accelerated action and increased private sector involvement.
Key executives from banks, insurance companies, capital markets entities, fintech firms, technology companies, regulatory authorities, and other players in climate mitigation and socio-economic development. We also encourage participation from international climate finance experts to share insights on implementing the new global finance goals.
This summit serves as a crucial platform for East Africa’s financial sector to align with global climate action commitments, capitalize on emerging opportunities, and drive sustainable development in the region.
