In an insightful interview with Ochieng Oloo, CEO of Think Business, Rajeev Pant, the CEO of Prime Bank, shared his thoughts on sustainable banking and the bank’s journey towards a more environmentally and socially conscious future. The discussion covered various aspects of Prime Bank’s operations, from its sustainable finance initiatives to its performance in recent years.

Sustainable Finance Initiatives

Prime Bank has been taking significant steps towards sustainable finance, recognizing its importance in the Kenyan market. Pant emphasized the bank’s commitment to environmental and social responsibility, stating, “We can still avoid the pitfalls of the so-called more developed countries. Look at what you have here in terms of the environment. It is amazing, it’s an advantage, which you shouldn’t lose.”

The bank’s approach to sustainable finance can be broken down into several key areas:

  1. Environmental Risk Assessment: Prime Bank has implemented a rating system for its clients, categorizing them based on their environmental sensitivity. Pant noted, “When I look at my book, the bulk of it is actually in the category of least environmentally sensitive to one category above that.”
  • Collaboration with Shareholders: The bank works closely with Africa Invest, a key shareholder, to improve its sustainability practices and reduce its carbon footprint.
  • Tracking and Measuring Progress: Prime Bank has implemented metrics to track its progress in areas such as paper usage, recycling, electricity consumption, and women empowerment.
  • Social Responsibility: The bank is actively involved in various charitable activities, including supporting HIV-positive children in an orphanage and feeding 500 children daily in the Korogocho Slum.
  • Future Initiatives: Prime Bank is planning larger-scale projects, including afforestation drives combined with water conservation efforts and sustainable forestry cultivation to generate employment.

Internal Sustainability Practices

While Prime Bank has made strides in promoting sustainability externally, Pant acknowledged that there’s still work to be done internally. He stated, “We haven’t gotten to paperless yet, that’s an honest answer. But that’s where we want to get to.”

The bank has implemented several internal sustainability measures:

  • Digitalization efforts to reduce paper usage and increase efficiency
  • Use of LED lights to conserve energy
  • Recycling of paper and plastics
  • Donation of old furniture to charitable organizations for reuse and repurposing

Pant emphasized the importance of digitalization in reducing the bank’s carbon footprint, stating, “It really just comes back to digitalization. It is the way for us to reduce our footprint.”

Lending Priorities and Customer Base

Prime Bank has incorporated sustainability considerations into its lending practices. Pant explained, “Whenever anybody applies for a loan, we have a sustainability policy which actually tracks to see whether it is high risk or not in terms of sustainability.”

The bank’s customer base spans across various sectors, including:

  • Manufacturers
  • Traders
  • Individuals (salaried employees and entrepreneurs)

However, Pant noted that the bank has limited activity in sectors like agriculture, reflecting its focus on metro areas.

Recent Performance and Economic Outlook

Discussing Prime Bank’s performance in 2023 and 2024, Pant described the bank as “an extremely conservative and steady bank” with high liquidity. He highlighted the bank’s consistent growth and low non-performing loan (NPL) ratio, stating, “Our net NPLs now would be somewhere around 2.8 percent. If you look at most banks, I think they’ll be closer to the five or six percent.”

Looking ahead, Pant expressed cautious optimism about the Kenyan economy, noting positive developments such as exchange rate stability and support from international financial institutions. He stated, “I think by 2025, we’ll give us a better barometer of where Kenya is headed out to.”

Prime Bank’s 20-Year Journey

Reflecting on Prime Bank’s 20-year history, Pant highlighted the bank’s consistent growth and commitment to innovation. Key milestones include:

  • Balance sheet growth from Ksh 5.7 billion to Ksh 170 billion
  • Expansion to 21 branches
  • Introduction of Prime Expresses, a new concept for smaller, more efficient branches
  • Staff growth from 113 to over 500 employees

Pant emphasized the bank’s focus on customer service and relationship-building, stating, “Many customers come here and tell us that here they feel like they are real customers but elsewhere, they just get processed.”

Future Outlook and Growth Strategy

Looking to the future, Pant envisions continued growth for Prime Bank while maintaining its focus on sustainable and customer-centric practices. He stated, “I think we will see a much larger bank, much bigger bank. As of December, we were ranked 11th by CBK. There was a point briefly, we were 10th last year.”

The bank’s growth strategy includes:

  • Expanding its retail banking offerings while maintaining a niche focus
  • Continuing to innovate and introduce new products
  • Maintaining a balance between growth and customer satisfaction

Pant summarized the bank’s philosophy, saying, “Growth is life. And I believe in that. You have to grow. But it means you grow in a manner which is sustainable and carries everybody along.”

Conclusion

As Prime Bank continues its journey towards sustainable banking, it faces both challenges and opportunities. Under Rajeev Pant’s leadership, the bank is striving to balance growth with environmental and social responsibility, while maintaining its commitment to customer service and innovation. As the Kenyan banking sector evolves, Prime Bank’s approach to sustainable finance may serve as a model for other institutions seeking to integrate sustainability into their core business practices.
